Purpose: The purpose of this discussion is to practice assessing evidence that justifies a belief.
Overview: This week’s discussion comes from your textbook (Rugierro, 2011, pp. 70-71). Read the following excerpt:
“Has government in the United States grown too big for the good of its citizens? Many people argue that it has. Their most publicized concerns are the government’s involvement in the “bailouts” of financial institutions, the virtual takeover of General Motors, and the enactment of health care legislation. They also point to federal, state, and city income taxes; gasoline and cigarette taxes; and an increasing number of regulations—for example, on the salt and fat content of foods, smoking, and seat belts. Those who disagree that government is too big point to its contributions to protecting the environment, maintaining product safety, and overcoming poverty and discrimination.”
Post: The purpose of this discussion is not to establish an answer to the question of government’s role, but rather to observe the methods of justification we employ in our discussions. You will be conducting library research and answering Part 1 and Part 2 described below.
Part 1: In 100 words tell the class about the strengths and weaknesses of the two stances you identified in your library search. What did you agree with? What did you disagree with? What seemed weak or unsupported in the argument? What was strong and clear about the argument?
Part 2: In 100 words discussion your conclusion of the views. If you conclude that one view is entirely correct and the others are mistaken, explain how you reached that conclusion. If you find that one view is more insightful than the others but that they all make some valid points, describe a view of your own that combines the insights from all views and explain why that view is the most reasonable of all.
Research: To answer these questions you will need to do research. Begin your analysis by conducting a library search on the course library portal at http://guides.acu.edu/core115 (Links to an external site.). Helpful terms you may consider searching are “limited government” or “free enterprise economy” or “mixed economy” or “socialist economy” (using quotes around the phrases) in either the OneSearch database or the Credo database.
